CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – The afternoon half of Saturday’s P.E.I. Colt Stakes doubleheader at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park had Windemere Skye keep her perfect season intact.
The highlight clash arrived in Race 6, and the unbeaten Windemere Skye seized early command and never looked back in the $22,500 Gold division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for two-year-old pacing fillies, pacing home in a sparkling 1:55 for driver Adam Merner and trainer Earl Watts. The Atlantic Bred daughter of Somewhere Fancy widened her margin with a 27.3 closer to keep her season spotless at 7-for-7 while previously undefeated New York sired Saulsbrook Rolo (Driven by Marc Campbell) made a first-over bid and faded to sixth to have her win streak snapped at six straight. Serenity Now (Jason Hughes) seized second ahead of Beach Jewels (Gilles Barrieau). Windemere Skye ($3.70) is owned by Windemere Farms of Springvale and Matt Burke of Stratford.
The other $22,500 Gold filly split in Race 10 went gate-to-wire to Bayonetta, who clicked in 1:57.4 for trainer Landon Campbell, with his father Marc Campbell in the race bike, turning back Uptown Tonight (Myles Heffernan Sr.) and Saulsbrook Desi (Brodie MacPhee). Bayonetta ($3.60) is a daughter of Cattlewash owned by Daniel Gaudreault of Quebec and Louis-Philippe Roy Racing of Ontario as she won her sixth straight.
The $18,600 Gold events for rookie pacing colts produced the day’s fireworks.
In Race 8, Zero Two Sixty went all the way to prevail in 1:56.3 for driver Gilles Barrieau and trainer Sifroi Melanson, up over Darbies Fancy (Adam Merner) and Sporty Anthony (Ken Murphy). Zero Two Sixty ($6.90) is owned by Ultimate Stable of Greater Lakeburn, N.B.
Then Race 12 detonated the tote board when Kapueno ($32.00) circled late to win in 1:56.4 for trainer Vaughan Doyle with Marc Campbell engineering the rally. Mclovin (Kenny Arsenault) was second with Windemere Barkley (Zach Mullins) third. Kapueno, a son of Betterthancheddar, is owned by Chris Kelly of Calgary, Alberta.
Grassroots action filled out the program with purses of $9,300 for colts won by Woodmere Bullet ($5.60) in race 1 in 1:58.4 for Corey MacPherson and trainer Jamie Smith, Windemere Britt ($5.20) clicking in 1:58.1 for Langille and trainer Kyle Williams, plus a double by trainer Ron Matheson with Barrieau aboard as Streakantonio ($3.00) won in 1:57.4 and Cattle Call ($2.80) was victorious in 1:56.1, while Disko Bay ($5.70) wrapped it up with a 1:58.3 blast for driver-trainer Paul Langille.
The $11,250 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Grassroots divisions for fillies were claimed by Bakers Dozen ($4.60) front-ending the second in 1:57.1 for driver Langille and trainer John Clarey, Mysterious Ways ($10.20) scoring in 1:57.2 for Jason Hughes and trainer Stephen Quinn and Isle Mach Da Money ($2.80) controlling the action in 1:58.1 for trainer-driver Barrieau.
Barrieau had a four-win driving performance, while Langille scored three victories on the day.
