CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Rookie trotting talent steps into the spotlight Thursday evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park as the Brian Andrew Memorial Trot takes centre stage.
The capital oval has a 16-dash card with a 6 P.M. start time.
The $21,725 Brian Andrew Memorial two-year-old trot for fillies lines up in Race 2 with a competitive group of freshmen squarely in the spotlight.
Hallsygurl (To be driven by Gilles Barrieau) has been the queen of the division thus far with three wins in four seasonal starts including a 1:59.2 victory over Red Shores Charlottetown for trainer Darryl MacLean and owners Calvin Larkin and Erika Bradley. Also in the field are Dusty Lane Margo (Jason Hughes), Bonmati (Corey MacPherson), Oceanview Banjo (George Rennison) and Roseys El Girl (Ken Murphy).
The colts take their turn in the $21,725 Brian Andrew Memorial division in Race 4, and Little Louis will command plenty of attention as the morning-line favourite from post 8. MacPherson drives the son of EL Rocket for trainer Kuri White and owners East Coast Captains of Cornwall, P.E.I. The youngster already sports a 2:02.2 lifetime record along with more than $30,000 banked. A model of consistency, Little Louis has four wins and a second from five lifetime outings. Hoponarocket (Barrieau) was second to him last time out and has rail control from the Mike McGuigan barn while stablemate Big Rig (McGuigan) holds downs post 2 after winning two starts back in 2:04. Others looking to step forward include Mr Old Home Week (Ryan Desroche), Howmac Prime Time (Marc Campbell), Nikway Rocks It (Myles Heffernan Jr.), Call Of Honor (Joey Pineau) and Its All About Fred (Adam Merner).
The older trotters take to the track in Race 8 for the $6,500 third leg of the Island Oceans Trot Challenge, and all eyes will be on Buckhead Ridge as he goes for a series sweep. The five-year-old son of Nuncio has captured both prior legs for driver Marc Campbell and trainer Landon Campbell, in 1:56.1 and 1:56.4. With more than $130,000 on his card, the Brady Doyle owned trotter enters as the one to beat from post 5 as he looks for win number 13 of the season.
Fight Song is a serious challenger from post 2 with Jason Hughes in the seat for the Ashley Gamester stable. Also contending are Rocket Blast (MacPherson), Glider Man (David Dowling) and Curadh (Ryan Desroche).
